Global alliance of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and families Migrante International today said that the additional P22 in the Emergency Cost of Living Allowance (ECOLA) for workers approved by the National Capital Region regional wage board will only aggravate forced migration.
According to Migrante International chairperson Garry Martinez, “We agree with other sectors that the P22 ECOLA is an insult to workers, nothing but loose change in an attempt to quell the mounting demand for wage hike in light of continuous price hikes. Instead, workers’ demand for a legislated P125 wage hike has been heightened by this insincere move from the regional wage boards and the Aquino administration.”
“The government’s refusal to grant a legislated wage hike will only drive our workers to further desperation and hopelessness in these times of dire economic need. It will only force more workers to seek better-paying jobs abroad despite uncertainties and the socio-economic costs, and subject them to further exploitation of their cheap labor,” he said.
At least 4,500 workers leave the country daily to work abroad, says Martinez.
Migrante International fully supports the demand for the immediate passage of the P125 Bill in Congress for a legislated wage hike across the board nationwide. ###
