OFW group calls on SC to “rule with finality” on Hacienda Luisita

Global alliance of overseas Filipinos and families Migrante International today called on the Supreme Court to “rule with finality” and junk the motion for reconsideration filed by the Cojuangco-Aquino family against its decision to distribute Hacienda Luisita lands to farm workers.

The migrant group also urged the SC to immediately implement the free distribution of Luisita lands to farm workers as tension sparked anew in Hacienda Luisita a few days ago.

“We call on our SC Justices to be steadfast and not be unsettled by political and legal maneuvers being employed by the Cojuangco-Aquinos to prevent the implementation of the SC ruling. The motion for reconsideration filed by Cojuangco-Aquino family is a malicious and unnecessary legal obstacle meant to strip farmers and farm workers of their right to the land despite the SC decision,” said Garry Martinez, Migrante International chairperson.

Martinez also called on the SC to remove the provision in the SC ruling demanding “just compensation” because it is “being milked for all its worth by the Cojuangco-Aquino family for the purpose of skirting around the real issues and evading immediate distribution of the land to its rightful owners.”

“We call on all overseas Filipinos to support the fight of Luisita farm workers. Genuine land reform is a fundamental concern of all migrants and their families, without which we cannot completely address the phenomenon of forced migration. We condemn moves and schemes by the Cojuangco-Aquinos that are obviously meant to confuse the issue, intimidate farm workers, overturn the SC ruling and violate the right of farm workers to the Luisita lands.”###
